Extreme dieting and weight loss seems to be all the rage in Hollywood. Especially during awards season, when the ladies need to fit in that gown that’s just one size smaller then they really are. And no doubt there are ways to lose weight, and lose it fast. But, it’s only temporary, the weight will come back. This is worth repeating: the weight WILL come back. Not to mention, implementing extreme weight loss methods will only hurt your health. Are you willing to take that risk?
One extreme way to lose weight is just an abrupt cutting of calories. If you eat only 400-800 calories a day for a week, you’ll lost up to 5 pounds. And it’s advised that you do not exercise during this time, because it will only make you more hungry. Of course, you won’t have the energy to exercise either. And since most of us burn about 1500 (or more) calories a day, you’ll have a deficit in your caloric intake. You don’t need to be a medical professional to know that is just not healthy. Yes, to lose weight you do have to cut calories, but you need to do it in a slow and sustained manner, not just an abrupt cut. Losing weight is not only about cutting calories, it’s about eating foods that are healthy and rich in vitamins and minerals. Sometimes those foods may be a bit higher in calories but the bottom line is they are healthy.
Another bad idea that falls into the category of extreme weight loss methods is using laxatives. This is more popular than you might think, but to say it’s extreme is an understatement. What happens when someone abuses laxatives is that your body does not properly digest the food; it literally goes right through you. At this point, you will become dehydrated and nausea, and most likely will experience not only severe diarrhea but vomiting as well. This is one extreme method that is HIGHLY recommended you avoid.
The best way to lose weight, and keep it off, is by proper diet and exercise. Eating good foods like chicken and fish, fresh vegetables and fruit, drinking a lot of water, this a healthy and effective way to lose weight. Eggs for breakfast (because they are rich in protein), chicken or tuna for lunch, whole wheat pasta for dinner, choices like that. Avoid sugar and sweets (but do allow yourself a “fun” day where you can eat foods that are not necessarily recommended on a daily basis). Bake, don’t fry. Avoid processed foods and no matter what you do, avoid fast food.
A great way to burn calories and built some lean muscles is working your arms. Simple bicep curls or tricep extensions. This will burn the extra flab around those arm muscles, but also build the lean muscle that will in-turn allow your metabolism to rise. When your body has more muscle than fat, it turns into a fat blasting machine.
Some examples for arm exercises are:
Simple, yet effective. Holding 3-5 pound weights in the palms of your hands (and your palms can be facing up or down), curl arms up until they are about to the shoulder. Squeeze, hold, and release, slowing going back to your starting position. You should do 3 sets of 20 repetitions for effective results.
Standing with your left foot forward, bend your knees. At the hips, bend forward slightly, keeping your abs pulled towards spine. Placing your left hand on your left thigh for support, hold a 3-5 pound weight in your right hand. Keep your elbow bent, and then pull your right upper arm up and back, parallel with the floor. Extend your arm straight out behind you. Squeeze, hold and release, back to starting position. Do 3 sets of 12 repetitions on each side.
These are just a couple of ways you can add some fun and variation to your exercise routine. Be sure to do cardio as well. This won’t be the extreme way to lose weight, but the extremely healthy way to lose it. Don’t make it temporary become fit for life.
