Protein shakes are becoming increasingly popular with people who are trying to lose weight. They are often used between meals in place of a snack to reduce the amount of calories that are consumed throughout the day or even as a complete meal replacement. They can also be useful in helping the body to recover after an exercise session and this again can be of benefit to people who are trying to lose weight.
Benefits of protein shakes
– They are a convenient way to get the protein that is needed after a workout as many people will not eat a full meal that contains protein for some time after they have finished exercising.
– Protein can help build muscle. Muscle burns more calories than the equivalent amount of fat and so having a higher muscle mass will increase the resting metabolic rate which will increase the amount of calories that are burnt even before any exercise routine is started.
– Shakes that are made from natural proteins can provide the body with essential vitamins and minerals and can help the body perform necessary tasks.
– They may aid with weight loss if used as a meal replacement. This can help dieters receive the correct portions of each food group in one shake. It is recommended that protein shakes are only used as a meal replacement once a day.
When to use protein shakes?
There are various approaches to this, and different types of protein shakes. Personally I use Whey Protein after Gym and Micellar Casein before bed, however there are other forms of protein shake which are taken for breakfast or lunch as meal replacement in order to provide much needed nutrition, however protein shakes will only have a real benefit in terms of helping you lose weight when they are combined with a healthy diet and regular exercise.
Since to lose weight the body has to burn more calories then is consumed, for example to lose 1lb of weight per week a person would need to burn 500 more calories than are consumed, this can be achieved by either eating 500 less calories per day as part of a diet or to burn an extra 500 calories per day through exercise,or a combination of the both meaning you loose weight and feel less deprived in your diet.
